2014.7.31

The SW is making little appearances here and there but don't expect to see it unless you've got all day. Mostly NW wind swell showing at the beach in the thigh to waist high zone. Drained tide is likely taking a bit of size out of it but keeping it more walled. Light cross shore breeze, overcast and with a light drizzle. Water and air temp hanging in the low 60's. Avoid the high tide by a couple hours today and there'll probably be some fun corners... more volume is better for today.

The SW swell has faded fast in the last day with only occasional appearances on the buoy at this point. Enough NW wind swell making it around the corner for some fun looking waist high corners that could be going chest high + on better sets. Consistency is looking low and wind cross shore. Could be a fun day for a fun board, especially if the sun shows up. The tide is drained right now. Look for backwash and shore break a couple hours before/after the high.

Buoy is still reading a consistent SW and it's showing in the water. Pulse looks a lot like yesterday but cleaner. Chest high with good power and + sets. Very light winds and overcast but I expect both of those to change between now and the early-mid afternoon. Lots of fun waves but you need some real speed to get down the line. Not a beginners day.

SW Juice is back in the water. Buoy reading 3 ft 15 sec SW. Waves looking pretty mixed up but chest high + on the drained out tide can only mean more size will show on the flow. Not a beginners day. Skies are grey but we'll probably see a burn off later. Waves should be dandy all day as the high tide probably won't drown out waves of that size.

The SW is back and bringing just a little bit of juice to the beach. A 1-ish ft 15 sec period SW is on the buoy and seems to be helping push some wind "swell" around the corner into the beach. The wind swell is making for many jumbled lines but the corners seem to be walling a lot better than yesterday. Solid waist to chest high lines and maybe a bit + on double ups. Otherwise we see grey skies and light onshore wind which makes you think "whew! a reprieve yesterdays heat sounds nice". With water temp @ 63º & rising don't expect to be comfy in your 5-4. Just saying. Beginners: today's a nice day for a bodysurf but it's a little juicy for a board you can't control. Bolinas might have some lines for you on the high tide.

Another sunny day with light winds while I was down there. Looking very small & sloppy this morning. The low tide is likely holding back some size but the biggest I saw was a thigh high left roll through the middle. Good day for fair weather surfers and beginners alike. Avoid the high tide as all it'll bring is shore break for a few hours on each side.

The potatoes get smaller. Lots of thigh high waves coming through with occasional waist high sets. It's an 8 sec NW swinging in mostly and it's coming in with an almost comical like consistency. Watching it for a minute this morning almost reminded me of an early slapstick where the film is sped up. That's not to say it's a bad day! Great day for beginner and even intermediate surfers to get out and practice pop ups. The sun is out and shining which is a bonus, and our ocean is more and more soup-like every day. I saw one buoy read 64º at one point yesterday.

Small stuff for this morning. High tide isn't ramping up anything short-board worthy by the looks of it. Mostly a shin to thigh high squishy shorebreak at the moment. Lower tide could bring in some friendly little waves for beginners & longboarders but I wouldn't expect anything epic. Skies are partly cloudy and the wind isn't TOO bad but will probably pick up through the day per-usual.

Small but sweet. Thigh to waist high sets with lots of lulls in between. Partly cloudy skies with a light cross shore breeze. The Lagoon is still looking glassy but will it for long? We really can't say. Look for the best size a while before and after the mid-afternoon low tide.

SW swell gives way to shorter period NW swell. More of the same looking waves but a bit smaller. Running mostly in the thigh to waist high range. Lully sets make for long waits but the sun is in the sky and the wind is light. If the forecast reads true these conditions will give way to larger storm slop between now and thursday.

More or less the same as yesterday on tap for today minus a little bit of swell and turning the wind up a notch. Light cross wind from West-ish at the time I checked it. Looking waist to chest high the the occasional + set. Not a bad looking day for a long board if you know how to handle one. Some fast & fun looking conrners.

Waning SW swell in the water this morning. It’s looking like there are still fun lines to be had however. The higher tide is letting a little more energy through. Look for smaller more mixed surf as the tide drops into the afternoon. Light fog, light wind and light drizzle on tap for the morning as well.

Gloomy skies an lots of mist in the air. More light wind for this morning that’ll hopefully hold for a while. The SW swell is still in the water albeit with slightly less pep in it’s step. 13-14 sec period at a 3 ft max and waning. The drop to low tide should give the waves a little more punch. Probably cleanest between now and about a half hour before the low. If yesterdays any indicator it’ll be good fun after the turn around as well, albeit less organized. Watch out for backwash though, got a feeling about it today. Beginners use caution today. Bolinas might be a better bet.

Solid SW swell continues to swing it’s wait into shore at our little summer standout spot. We’re looking at more 14-15 sec SW at a max of 3-3.5 ft pumping chest-head high + waves into the beach. Lots of waves out there today if you can avoid the high tide; again not a beginners day.

MIDDAY UPDATE:
Confirmed chest to head high sets with lots of racy lines and enough juice to get you down them. Occasionally going a foot overhead the swell's definitely peaking. Get it while it's good people.
Light wind, light drizzle. Overcast. Why would you go out in this weather you ask? Swells up! Thats why. Solid 14-15 sec SW has been building for the last 36 or so hours. Likely peaking this morning and waining from here. NOT A BEGINNERS DAY. Unless you really know what you're doing keep the longboard at home until tomorrow evening. Can't ride a short board? It's a great day for a bodysurf. Right now it's throwing solid chest, occasionally head high waves. Not sure how the tide turn around will affect it exactly but I'll be in the water doing an intimate analysis to find out.

2014.7.15

EVENING UPDATE/DAILY OVERVIEW:
The south swell is showing up! Buoy has been registering a little pulse of 13-14 sec SW since mid-day but the high tide kept it out of sight for a while. Checked it @ 16:00 and saw only shore break. Checked again @ 19:00 and there were waves. Nothing prolific but some nice thigh-waist high corners that seem to be liking the mid tide. Early low tomorrow will likely kill the pulse; I'll be checking it right around low/turn around to see if it does anything. Stay tuned.

Steady onshore breeze at 6:30 when I checked it this morning. Grey skies and shin high waves. The buoy is reading occasionally bigger sets so maybe on the tide push there'll be some fun ones. Nothing too consistent as of yet however. Just more small potatoes for today and with a healthy helping of wind on top. Only good for the dedicated long boarder maybe. With any luck the forecasted SW will show up in the next couple days while we've still got the negative morning tides.

13:30 UPDATE:
The tide's come up and the waves've stayed small. All looking like shore break ATM but there's a fair chance of some fun dinker waves this evening. Wind's light onshore and if yesterday's any indicator it'll stay that way. Sun's out and looking lovely so it's an all around nice day at the beach. Water is a balmy 61.5 out there now; took a dip without the wetsuit yesterday at south rodeo and it was actually pretty pleasant! Photos taken @ 13:30

Small, glassy and this time with light offshore wind. Mostly clear skies that will hopefully get nicer but likely get worse first. It's looking like a pretty unridable jumble right now but there is a small SW registering with enough consistency on the buoy that there will probably be some fun ones once the tide turns around at 7:30. Lots of exposed rock makes for a cool view of the reef if you ever wanted a glimpse at what's really going on underwater at the point. I'll likely be back later with an afternoon update for anyone thinking of making the evening low tide session, hopefully with good news.

Tide pooling, yes tide pooling people are the words of the morning. Drained out negative tide combined with very little NW wind swell and no real south swell to speak of makes for a lot of exposed rock. The water is warm and if yesterday is any indicator we're looking a a pleasantly sunny albeit windy afternoon. We're looking at mostly ankle to calf high waves with occasional thigh high "sets". The buoy is indicating some kind of radically inconsistent long period SW that could easily generate some waist/chest high waves but it's not likely you'll see it unless you spend a long time in the water today.

3 PM UPDATE: The wind got heavy but the sun came out. It's a nice enough day to be at the beach but the waves are looking like little and less as the day goes on.
10 AM UPDATE: Tide's rising fast and there fewer lines to be had. If you're looking for more than a nice dip in the ocean (water's almost 60º today) then you're probably best off waiting until the evening low
Small and glassy are the words of the morning. Looking at knee to thigh high with likely occasional waist high sets coming in with fair enough consistency. Be wary if you were planning on bring the short board and be stoked if you were planning on bringing the long board. The clouds are forecast to linger but the wind is forecast to stay light-ish. If you're going to surf don't dawdle because a 1 o'clock high tide will probably render these waves 100% shore break.

Oh so foggy this fine morning and if it keeps you down then just remember it keeps the wind down too. Looking a lot like it was yesterday afternoon this morning. Lots of head to head and a half high faces out there with a solid 18 second period registering consistently on the buoy. 10 AM UPDATE: Confirmed overhead sets and sets are getting bigger/more frequent despite the ebb tide. It's fun out there and looking to get even better. Wind still light and still overcast Ladies and gentlemen the south swell is on its way in today. The buoys started picking up a little 17 sec SW last night and we are oh so fortunate to seeing it continue to register with more and more consistency consistently. Looking about waist to chest high with some head high sets and I wouldn't be surprised if a few overhead ones showed up with the tide push sometime around noon. Light onshore and gloomy skies again for today but if there's a day to put up with it this might just be the one. I didn't wait to capture a real set because upon pulling up I saw a beautiful set swing through and stay wide open and decided I'd rather surf than take pictures. May update mid-late morning.

Extra late post for today as I was caught up working on some MUCH needed board repairs this morning. No south swell to speak of but the forecast is looking hopeful and you'll hear about it here the very soon after it registers on the buoys. We're looking at more small surf for the day at about a waist to chest high max. Overcast with a strong steady onshore breeze @ 14:30 and though the sun will likely peek it's head out sometime between 4 and 5 it's cold down there at the moment. Plus side to the weather is what could be an overrun jungle at the beach is looking no worse than an average friday. Only a few heads in the water and some fun looking waves if you don't mind the slop/shorebreaky conditions.

Signs of real swell down significantly from yesterday but don't take that to mean there are no waves. Gloomy skies and a light onshore breeze set to build steadily. More of the same west swell on tap and lots of close outs to show. It's looking somewhere between knee and chest high depending on where you sit and with the shorter period there are plenty of waist high nuggets staying open on the shoulder that look real fun. Wind is light but steady and poised to build throughout the day. It's a gloomy one so come with the booties and hood.
